The Penn State Alumni Association

What’s been happening:

After my graduation in 1949 from Penn State, I researched the BCG vaccine for TB at the University of PA for 1 year. I was accepted at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, where I completed my education as a doctor. My internship was at Delaware Hospital for 1 year where I was assigned mainly in the emergency room. In 1955 I opened a rural practice of general medicine in Tamaqua, PA. This was a seven-day workweek including home visits with a bag of supplies and medicines. After observing many allergy problems, I decided to study immunology and was fortunate to learn from the Pioneers of Allergy and Asthma in Penn. I was awarded a full fellowship, and this area became my new specialty in PA. In 1985, thirty years later, I decided to move to Pinehurst, NC, and retire. After a few months of golfing and boredom, I was asked to join a doctor in Pinehurst to treat his allergy patients. This quickly became five days a week, and I decided to open up a new practice. I contracted to build a new office building and began the 1st "Pinehurst Allergy & Asthma." This business was a great success, and I was thinking of retiring in 1998 when I acquired a buyer for the practice. I stayed with the new owner in a semiretired status until I suffered a stroke in 2005. After 52 years as a doctor, I am forced to retire permanently.
